Title: assassin snails
Post by: Tara7 on March 12, 2013, 12:40:58 AM
At some point in my aquatic adventure i purchased some plants and a week later saw many pest snails all over the tank. I was taking out at least 50 a day! so I purchased 8 assassins and within 3 weeks there no snails left! At the same time the assassins were breeding like crazy. Then all of a sudden they all died one after the other :( I was very sad, and am still wondering why... Is it that they had nothing to eat after the pest snails were gone? What do they eat if there are no snails? I feed my fish frozen blood worms and brine shrimp besides the usual pellets and flakes...

I'm sure your fish ate most of the food before your assassins could... A good idea is to add food at night.

I used to breed them and i also noticed a decline in population and the breeding slowed once live food ran out.... They survived fine though because they were in a tank on their own. I just fed them half a bloodworm cube or sinking pellets every few days.

Thank you so much. I guess the mystery is solved and I'm sad to think they probably starved to death. :( Next time I'll follow your advice about feeding at night.
