Title: Yuck...leaches?
Post by: Netti on April 12, 2014, 10:23:58 AM
So I was doing a water change on my 10 gallon and noticed some odd brown things on the head of my sulawesi snail. It didn't look like dirt, more like smooth, live things. Looked up leaches and yes, it looks exactly like that!

So, I read up on how to treat them, and am now giving the snail a salt bath, 1/2 tsp salt to one cup of water. The first sucker has already let go and is sitting wriggling on the bottom. YUCK!

Has anyone else ever had to deal with these? How successful was your treatment?

Did I already say YUCK.....(shiver, and yuck)

They can't be worst then three refrigerators of maggots.  I am sure they smell better too.
But where would you get leaches?  Did you add some new snails or plants?

Who has 3 refrigerators with maggots? (This actually brings back a memory of me helping to clean out someone else's apartment and finding maggots in a thermos can in the freezer  :uhoh: )

I did add one new plant, a Tiger Lotus, but reading up on that problem I found out that wild caught snails often are "infected" with them. I just hope that the salt treatment does not end up killing the snail....there has been some movement, but now she is just sitting there!

Phew, I think she is going to be fine! She's been climbing the stalks of the Vallisneria plants and traveled from one side of the tank to the other. There is a different kind of treatment using "No Planaria" that is supposedly better tolerated.

I can try to find it tomorrow, but I wonder if I should wait until I see evidence of more leeches. How much time should I give the snail to get over this last treatment?

Netti,

Good luck with the snail -- I think salt usually kills them.......

No worries, GB, she is doing splendidly. I think she is feeling a whole lot better now that the parasites are off of her. I haven't seen any new ones, but I read they can hide inside her shell, so I guess I will continue having to look out for signs of any!

That sounds just gross Nettie!  I am glad you were able to remove them from her with no issues.

Doesn't it, Belinda? Just thinking about it grosses me out! I was surprised how many there were........there must have been 20 or so, didn't count them, but they were all different sizes too!
