Title: Most Labor Intensive Task
Post by: Wheels on the Bus on September 08, 2014, 09:29:37 AM

Facebook Post of the Week: What is the most labor intensive maintenance task you do for your tanks?

Gopi: Currently manually removing macroalgae from the reef tank...

Danni: Cleaning the gunk out of the filter sponge.

Karen: Annual cleaning of he sump, takes 4-5 hours and about a trillion buckets of water.

SM: Trimming the plants--removing dead leaves, thinning out clumps, cutting bank stem plants, picking all the java moss out of the nooks and crannies, adding fertilizer tabs

Ruthie: Taking the filter out the tank without spillage to get the gunk off the sponge

Russ: In my shop and hatchery, it used to be cleaning and resetting large commercial media cartridges and filters with water changes being sort of automatic. Now it is reversed with water change being the most labor intensive and filter reset being number 2.

FM: Cleaning the canister filters, but realistically it isn't very difficult. I can't complain.

KK: Yeah thinning my plants or else I would have to give my fish machetes so they could slash their way through the jungle.

Having just cleaned my canister filter yesterday, I'll have to go with that. To be fair, it only needs cleaning every six months or so, but it has five layers of media and takes at least three buckets of old tank water and a stack of towels. 'A quick ten-minute clean', I thought, having just spent an hour on water changes. Almost another hour later, I was done. The towels were drenched. My hands and arms were filthy. And the electronic indicator was flashing something scary at me. By the time I'd dug out the manual and located the English-language 'error indication' page, it had stopped flashing and gone back to normal.

It is an awesome filter. But yeah. Pretty labour intensive, even if only a couple of times a year.

It is good for most people. Including me.

Hi Cortez,

Could you elaborate what is good for most people and yourself?
