My snail had not moved in a week, yet didnt smell. I laid him on the edge of the tank, and 5 minutes later he fell IN the tank, and crawled half way up the side glass, then fell to the gravel. hasnt moved now in a week. He still looks pink, as his trap-door moves from closed to about 3/8" open. Do they do a hibernation? My Nerites are doing well, and all water qualitys are normal. I dont want to flush him, but i dont want him laying dead, stinking up my 125. Any suggestions?

They do not hibernate. You're describing a snail in distress. It sounds as if, for whatever reason, the snail is slowly dieing. It's doing the typical laying on the bottom occasionally slightly opening while remaining closed the majority of the time. Observe it closely.

Do not flush the snail. You can put it in a bowl of water with a lid, and place it in the fridge for 24 hours then in the freezer for an additional 12 hours or more. That will humanely end it's suffering if that's what you choose to do.

However, only you can see the snail and how it is behaving so you are the only person who can make the decision as to what to do about it.

Brigs do seem to rest after laying a clutch but that's the only time that I have observed them laying still for any length of the time.

Good Luck/HTH

I just want to point out that about six months ago, I thought one of my apple snails was near death - very much like yours - and he didn't die, in fact he fully recovered but has been very active for the last five months.  I'm still surprised whenever I look at him.

Read the keeping happy snails thread stickied at the top of this forum. I think you will find some helpful information in it.

What color did you get?  Sorry about your loss. Sad
