I found the coolest shrimp, and of course I had to have him. I know he is a filter feeder, so I put a algae wafer on the deck of my filter and it sends it thru the water coloum, he parks on a plant right in front of it eating away, I plan on leaving him in the ten for a few weeks then moving him in to the 36 com tank, which has more food for him in the water coloum. I read you can have up to 4 in a gallon but that seems alot, I also read that most of them starve because there is not enough food in the water coloum for them to eat. Hence putting him in the 36. Plenty of plants algae misc food etc....

Anyone have one of these, I read they can get quite large up to 5 inchs, it is pretty cool. I have seen and used Prawns for the foodservice, they where U-6 which means on the average 6 to a pound. they where huge about 2 inchs in diameter and about 9 inch long head to tail, can the bamboo shrimp get that big???

I think that April has some. Smiley

There is a type of liquid food that you can add to its tank but I can't think of what it is at the moment. Sorry, but if I remember I'll let you know what it is.

I have one of these!  I saw a group of them at the local fish store and HAD to have it!  So interesting to watch.  I named it Jazz Hands.  He's in a 45 gal with tetras, other shrimp and an angel fish.

I read somewhere that an avid fish keeper fed them Cyclo-Peeze , but I haven't gotten any yet to try. I pulverize tropical flake for now.  Mine seems pretty happy with what he's getting now.  He mostly clings to the exact same place of a chunk of wood I have in the tank and and there is a little pile of poop directly under him, so I assume he's getting enough.  LOL

He comes out at night and sometimes takes a trip around the tank, but it's very shy.  I keep all of the tank walls but the back clean to make sure there is enough for it and the Amano shrimps to eat.

I read that if they're not getting enough, they walk along the gravel cleaning directly.  I saw it doing that once after a very large water change.  So I try to keep that in mind.

I have the african atya's. They hang out on the filter INLET tube screen's in my tanks. They seem to have figured out where the best supply of food is.

ok, if he is picking off that pellet, he is already starving
you need to act fast to not lose them. Crush into a powder all the foods combined, and put in it's own jar, away from your fish food. This is now your shrimp food. I use everything I have and put it into a mortor and pestle. I put shrimp pellets, algae tabs, all the  flake I own, everything. I crush into a fine powder, and then I might crush a little more for luck.

I put the powder into the filter outflow twice a day, just like you fed your fish.

If you see them picking off the floor, then you need to feed them better. They need a aged, well established tank to survive, I have had mine for 2 years

In addition to April Lynn's good advice, you can also use liquid food.  The one I use is Kent Marine MicroVert.  The difference was pretty dramatic after I started using the MicroVert.  I had the shrimp a year before I started using the MicroVert.  He did not molt once doing that year.  Now he is pretty much on a monthly molting schedule.  He has grown from about an inch to somewhere between 2 and 3 inches now.  Of course, the cardinals have figured out a way to get a meal out of the MicroVert too.  There appears to be very small grains of something in there.  Whatever it is the cardinals go crazy over it.  RTR was the one that suggested the CYCLOP-EEZE.  However, I was unable to find cyclop-eeze until recently in the New Orleans area.  I am currently using another frozen food, mainly for the fish, but I think the shrimp is getting his fair share of it too.
Basically anything which is small enough to get past the fish and stays in the water is good, which this food does.  It is just one of the frozen variety foods you see in most lfs.  But I threw the box away so I don't know exactly what it is.  I only need about a 1/4 of cube for the shrimp and fish.

You can also lower the water level in the tank a bit.  This will cause more splashing and stirring which keeps any food in the water longer rather then sinking down to the bottom.  There is a limit to how much I can lower the water because of the fish.  There also is the issue of the greater noise from the waterfall.  But I don't hear it at night when I sleep so it does not bother me much. But this is just more evidence for me that community tank just don't work as well as people think.  But that is a discussion for another day.

Finally, try putting a plant or something in the outflow of your filter.  I have gone through a few variations over the past two years on this.  I finally settled on allowing a plant (fake) to float along the surface.  The shrimp seems to like this one the best.  He can usually find a good spot in the current regardless of how the plant happens to be floating around at the moment.
Also, I do not aggressively clean the tank of what I think are diatoms.  This way if I neglect the shrimp for some reason he is not going to starve.  Although in the first year, the diatoms are probably what kept him alive.

I hope all that helps.  It is possible to keep these guys in good shape in a tank.  But you have work a bit more then most fish.  My shrimp is also about two years old.

sounds good, will make the changes, just to clarify though, I actually put the wafer on the tray of the water output so as it dissolves it goes into the water coloum, he seems to be very happy, but I will make the changes right away. thanks for the great advice that is why i love this place.

All -

got a bamboo shrimp last week....named him Woodie.  He's doing great, likes to hang ten on a leaf in a high water flow area under filter.  watching him eat is fascinating.

Funny story...about thirty minutes after adding him to the tank, I notice a shrimp carcass / shell on bottom of tank.  I immediately suspected he was eaten by a tank mate.  I even started looking for the culprit (a smiling fish with big belly  Wink),  and broke the disappointing news to my daughter.

2 hours later, I return to the tank, and there's Woodie with a brand new shell, hanging ten again!  Needless to say, everyone was happy to see him again!

I had a similar experience with my shrimp when we got him home the other day.  I was sure the shrimp had been consumed, but couldn't image who would have been the culprit, since he was bigger then everyone in the tank.

A couple hours later, he crawled out of his hiding place in the holey rock and we were all excited.  It is eerie how complete the molt is.  I was sure it was a dead shrimp!
