Got Fish?

« on: October 19, 2009, 02:54:05 PM »

Hey everyone, I haven't posted in a long time and now I'm glad to say that I'm much more experienced.

I've been thinking of getting some fiddler crabs and I've been doing plenty of research on the internet. I still have a few questions though.

1) Is it ABSOLUTELY necessary to put a filter in the brackish water part of their habitat?
2) Would aquarium salt be ok to use, or should I use sea salt?
3) Can they live with anything else brackish? I've heard that they can but I'm not sure....
4) Will they eat crickets as I've heard?
5) I plan to use sand with gravel on the bottom or just sand as substrate. Would that work? Any special type of sand?
6) How would I prepare the sand?
7) I plan to have artificial plants, some java fern or java moss, driftwood, rocks to get to the surface, caves, a food dish, and possibly a few other things. Hood is a major yes.

Thanks in advance!

1.) not if you change the water daily or at least every other day.
2.) sea salt is mandatory
3.) you would need a HUGE tank to make enough water for the brackish fish and enough land for the terrestrial crab.
4.) never heard that before?
5.) play ground sand is fine
6.) clean it carefully by rinsing it repeatedly.
7.) Java fern and java moss will die with the exposure to brackish water.

Thanks for the help!
1) Would a tetra filter work? Ex: 2-10, or a power filter?
2) I'll have to return the aquarium salt in that case.
3) Hmmm, I guess I'll just go with a couple crabs depending on my tank size.
4) I read it on a site somewhere.
5) I've been thinking of buying reef sand, it has a nice look to me. I really don't trust local sand lol.
6) Basically the same as flourite and other substrates.
7) Oh well, I thought they were able to live in brackish.

I don't know yet, it will be a 10+ though. I've heard they can live in a 5 gallon.

LOL, a 20L would be a typical habitat, and you wanted fish in there too... if you want fish you better plan on a 55.

I won't go with fish. I'll just keep crabs. I really didn't care just wanted to know if it would work or not. Thanks for all the help!
