Author Topic: Need planted tank lighting suggestion  (Read 342 times)

I am combining two 30 gallon planted tanks into a 60 gallon (36" long) tank and need a lighting suggestion. I currently use Coralife Aqualites, which provide 3 WPG to those tanks. For a while now, I've been feeling like that may be a bit too high a light for what I have growing in the tank (swords, crypts, java fern, anubias, etc., none of which are really high light plants). I have been fighting a somewhat losing battle against black beard algae even though I have injected C02.

In an attempt not to make the same mistakes, any recommendations for lighting fixtures?

Note, the 60 gallon is a somewhat high tank and I will be using C02 and Eco complete substrate.

With the taller tank you will lose some of the intensity of the lights as it will have farther to travel through the water, so you may not really be at 3 wpg anymore, but you will still have plenty of light to provide for the plants you have, as like you said, they are all typically low light plants.  Enjoy your bigger tank!

BBA (black beard algea) is due to fluctuation of CO2, not really due to high light level.  Also dosing Excel as prevention will help keep it down.

I would go with a t5ho fixture.  The higher intensity light will make it easier to reach the substrate and it is way more efficient than CFLs.  A two bulb fixture should be sufficient for the low light plants, but since you are adding co2 you may want to consider a 3 bulb fixture.  Some places like Catalina lighting will offer some flexible configurations.

Crypts may be slow growers compared to other plants like various stem plants, but they seem to grow fairly quickly for me in my medium light/co2 supplied tank.

I ended up with another Coralife Aqualite with two 96 watt bulbs.
