Hi, so doctors heres the case. My male swordtail (1 of 2) is hanging out on the bottom and when he tries to swim he dart up about and inch and then falls back down. I noticed this behavior for the first time this morning. So i go to look at him this afternoon and he is hiding on the bottom under a rock ornament. I pick him up with the net and notice his fins may be somewhat smaller but its very hard to tell. then i let him back and he does a spiralling nose dive to the bottom and then just slowly pushes his nose until he is back into a safety zone for him. Any thoughts? I beleive that the fins are clamped to his side. Eyes look normal and so does color. He still has his sword so i doubt that fin rot is affecting him but i could be wrong.

Hey Brantman, you know the drill: 1 - numerical readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate 2 - tank size and other inhabitants 3 - how long have the swordtails been in the tank? 4 - any new additions & was QT used? 5 - maintenance schedule The more info the better.

1- Ph= 7.0-7.2, ammonia= 0, nitrite= 0.0-0.1 2- a 20g with 6 swordtails total (2 male, 3 female) 3- swordtails have been in tank for 2-3 weeks 4- no need to quarantine as it was a brand new tank that was completely cycled 5- in the short time since its been a full operation, 2 water changes of 50%

If it helps to know a time frame from first symptom to death then that would be less that 18 hours. he died about 2 hours ago.... now im trying to figure out how to save the others if they also become sick.

what kind of water treatment are you using? I had swordtails and found that they do not like any heavy metals in the water, I use API Tap water conditioner, and have not had any strange fish deaths. They might be sensitve to that, and if thats not it then try to do a few more water changes more frequently, that always seems to help.
Sorry about the loss

I just use tap water and then use a tetra aquasafe dechlorinator on that. the others arent showing any weird behavior at all. no clinging to the bottom, or hiding behavior.

Hopefully it was just the one fish who was ill. Keep the water pristine with extra water changes for a while to give the others the best chance at staying healthy.
