Hi,
I've read that the cochui is the only one that stays solely at the bottom but are hard to find. Whereas the other two do venture up frequently not to schoal but only to search for food. I also read that six would be a good enough number if space is limited and pairing is not an issue.
I'm thinking that if the cochui do only stay at the bottom, those are the ones I want so they don't ever occupy the schooling area of my cardinals.
Is this the case?

This is the problem when dealing with strata in a home aquarium. It is not deep enough. The rivers, lakes, and streams that our fish are found in run anywhere from a few inches deep to a hundred feet or more deep. so our fish do not stay in one area, they will be all over. Your cardinals will be at the top, middle and bottom of the tank. The cories, no matter what type, will stay mostly on the bottom but will swim to the top and all over.
As for seeing them the dwarf cories tend to hide more. The fewer of them there are the more they hide. In my 29 (Comprable in length to a 20 Long)when I had the hasbrosus and pygmeus the more of them there were the more I saw. I started with a group of 6. When I added 3 more I saw them more. At 15 they were all over the place. THe pygmeus tended to come out only at feeding time even with the larger group. Having never kept cochui I have no experience but from what I remember reading when they first came on the market they tended to swim all over the tank more than the others did.

I've only found 2 LFS's that have these.
One has only the pygmaeus from time to time and can't special order any other type.
And the other has the hastatus (not one I want) on the list for ordering and said there may be a possibility of ordering the Cochui.

Here is the article I found quite informative, please look it over and tell me what you think. "Dwarf Cory and Pygmy Cory" http://www.petsparade.co.uk/articles/?a=88

Acccording to the authors experience, the cochui is purely bottom dwelling species whereas the others do venture into the upper strata. The hastatus even school with tetras.

My pygmaeus (14 of them in a 55 gallon tank) spend most of the time on the bottom. They really don't spend much time mid-water.

Thanks for the post!
Went to another not so local LFS today and they have several Pygmys but they're only about 1/4 inch in length. They want $20 for 6. I spoke to him about the Cochui and he may be able to get them. I think I'll hold off to continue the search. If nothing else, just because they are so hard to find.
I did find another member elsewhere that has 3 males but he can't remember where he got them. He's also looking but only for females to breed.

I settled with 8 Pygmaeus for $1.99 each at a different LFS.
