Hi,

I read that they should be kept as 3 pairs at minimum if space is limited.

Is this the case?

Generally more females than males.  The males tend to be in relentless pursuit, so having a few extra females means there is some rest time for at least one female once in a while.

2 or 3 males to 4 or 5 females  would be my recommendation.
