I just received an ad from aquariumplants.com that they have a fiddler crab and nerite snail combination for algae control.  I didn't really look into it, but they said that the snail can't reproduce in fresh water, so I'm assuming the crab is freshwater, too.  You may be able to get more information from them.

Hermit crabs sound fun too.
Good luck.

Nerites are brackish snails that are capable of surviving in fresh water, but not reproducing. They're like mollies- they really should be in brackish, but people keep them in freshwater all the time.
