My Girlfriends mum wants us to make a pond for some newts which have settled under a tarpaulin in her field, I don't know which species they are as I haven't seen them, but she says they're not Great Crested which means they're either Palmate Newt (Triturus helveticus) or Common Newt (Triturus vulgaris vulgaris).

We'll be digging this pond and probably lining it, so I would like to get an idea of the layout/size of the pond needed, I know they're going to need to be able to get in and out, but other than that don't know much about them. We're not intending a filter as that requires electricity and I've seen them do alright in a puddle on a mud footpath so it's obviously not required.
