ok not sure whats going on here but I have the hydro theo Heater 300w for my 75 gallon tank. I just cleaned the tank and added water but to me it feels cold, won't really know for sure till tomorrow, but here is the problem. In Feb we had a real bad ice storm here and our power was out for 8 days, we do have a whole house generator and that is what we used for the 8 days. Anyway when the power came back on we had a terrible power surge and even a small fire in the house. but on one side of the heater tube going down about halfway its brown. Can't really even see a light on the heater. How can I tell if its still good?

Do you have an aquarium thermometer in there?  What does the temp say?

Personally, I would get a new heater.  I don't trust anything electrical once something has happened to it.

When in doubt, do a water change.
