My 5 ghost shrimp are doing well, been with me about 9 days, have molted and the one female had her eggs hatch overnight. I understand that ghost shrimp larvae usually die of starvation or being eaten, but I found that at least one keeper has had them live by scraping the side of the tank of the algae and letting it drift, which I did. I can only hope, those larvae are too neat, tiny but identifiable and they can move in 2" sports fast. I still hole to replace them with RCS and get these guys in one of my larger display tanks but have none yet. I must ask if anyone here has raised ghost shrimp larva?

I don't raise Ghost shrimp, but I do raise orange (pumpkin, tangerine) neocaridia shrimp...like cherry shrimp only orange. I started with 6 about 2 years ago now I probably have 200. I didn't do anything special just fed the fish in the tank as I normally would and drop an algae pellet in for the otos and the shrimp. They breed like rabbits. as long as the water is good and especially if you have live plants they will find things to eat. Just give them some time and they will establish themselves (if you don't have fish that will eat them up). Also don't mix any red cherries and the ghost or any other neocaridia shrimp as they will interbreed and you'll just get clear or brown shrimp as in the wild. Hope this helps

That helped a lot! Thank you very much. What seems strange to me as I look for RCS locally is how much they cost, as they do, as you say, breed profusely. I have some leads though. The ghost shrimp larvae seem gone, bummer.

you could try aquabid...you will find any number of shades of red cherry shrimp. also craigslist sometime...there are also yellow, blue, orange versions now. I think generally the darker the color the more they cost, but if you get light colors they will breed true and you can save the brightest and darkest and the others can be snacks for fish or you could be like me and just keep them all lol

I found some relatively nicely priced RCS but in research before buying them and putting my ghost shrimp elsewhere I have reconsidered, for now anyway. It seems some "ghost shrimp" are actually a highly predatory species sold mostly to the chain stores with catastrophic consequences. Does anyone know about this? The ghost shrimp are doing quite well so far with me, I may just wait on a change of species for now.

I have never heard that. As far as I have heard, ghost shrimp will eat dead or dying cherry shrimp but not healthy ones. Can you give us a link to that article?

I hope this works, it is one of several, many actually where people bought immature Machrobachium sp. sold as ghost shrimp.

One is in Aquarium advice, "Ghost shrimp eating all my other fish." My attempts to copy failed. I have found many similar threads.

You're getting closer, Gregg. Just no cigar yet.
You posted a link to a blog. But, there are so many topics in there about cherry shrimp that it would take forever for me to find exactly what you were reading. What you would need to do is to find the thread that you read and highlight that address so that it will come up when you paste.

#2 Crepe Aquarium Advice Addict Crepe's Avatar Join Date: May 2010 Location: Houston, Texas Posts: 2,332 You didn't get ghost shrimp. Some shrimp are sold as ghost shrimp are actually a species of shrimp that get much larger and are very carnivorous. I can't tell you the exact species yet but that's what has happened. __________________

Now you got us to the author of your quote but he has over 2300 posts so we can never see the exact thread. We can't even see the original question or who asked it. I don't see where it says that they are sold to mainly big box stores but I guess I will take your word for it.
I am not trying to be picky. When something like this comes up. we would like to see what was actually said so that a person can make an intelligent decision. You know how the Internet is. All kinds of info are posted which is either true or not. So, rather than taking something as Gospel, we need references. When I showed you how to copy and paste, you did a great job taking me to a specific thread. You would have to do the exact same steps in this situation.

This one came up perfectly. I found some relatively nicely priced RCS but in research before buying them and putting my ghost shrimp elsewhere I have reconsidered, for now anyway. From the above quote from you in this thread, I thought that you were talking about ghost shrimp eating cherry shrimp. My mistake. Yes, I have heard of them eating tropical fish. Most times, it is because the fish is dead or dying but it can also be a misidentified species of shrimp. This is one reason why knowing what species is being sold is so important. It is another reason for frequenting a local LFS instead of a big box store.
