I'm setting up a ten gal tank to be used for a holding tank. I brought some Bio Max and put it in one of my existing tank in the filter and was wondering how long it needs to be in there to establish beneficial bacteria to use in the new tank.

Actually it needs to remain in the filter in order for nitrifying bacteria to colonize and maintain. It should be rinsed periodically in unchlorinated water to remove any detritus that may collect between the rings. How long before colonization depends on the ammonia supply and O2 supply along with appropriate water movement to deliver these needed compounds and remove bio waste. Too high ammonia level will affect conversion of nitrite to nitrate.
