I found this on Amazon. It is advertised as a water clarifier. It is a brown, square, porous block. It has been in my 40 gallon tank for about 6 weeks now. I first noticed a difference after about 10 days. The water was so much clearer. The manufacture does not make this claim but I have really hard water (Midwest) and I am not having the same troubles with hard water deposits on the hood and rim like I used to. I was wondering if anyone else uses this. It is also supposed to be an excellent breeding area for beneficial bacteria.  So far I am really liking it

I get the same results plus superior filtration simply by using a Hamburg Matten filter. This is a 2 to 3 inch thick piece of rigid foam which is placed at one end of the tank, I touches both the front and rear glass and the bottom glass. The top edge of the foam is just above the surface when the tank is completely filled. I only need to clean these filters about once every 2-3 years or more.

That does sound similar. Glad it is working for you.
