I have just started a tank with several cichlids, small of course.. I have a Jack Dempsey and from what I see it is female. She is always turning Almost completely Black! She is still doing good because she goes back to her color when she is eating! What an interesting fish :-)

I have a jack and an oscar plus a pleco a big pleco. Both my jack and Oscar are small. Had them both for 2 months, my pleco is almost 2 yrs. My jack seems to be very passive and the oscar is the aggressor. They live in a 55gal tank.

I adopted a 10-year-old jack Dempsey. He was totally mature and looked pretty brutal, but when happy, looked amazing. His name was fang. He had a large knobby tooth that played a big role in my nightly entertainment. He did total destruction on any thing live and waited like an anxious dog when I get home from work. He was like a wild boar in a fish tank and he loved to eat. He was a devoted fish that made it clear to me that there is nothing getting between me and him, including any other kind of fish I tried to add to his tank. Boy could he get an attitude! Well, Poor old fang, he passed away~ I think he may have problems with his arteries from all the sushi. I have another one now, I asked for the smallest one in the tank :) His name is bolt jr.

I have acquired male/female set of J.D.'s that are full grown. I find mine to be very timid. I have these in their own tank a 55 gal. They never leave each others side. They have spawned in the past and I hope they do again.

Jack Dempseys are one of the most fun fish to feed. When feed feeders they will try and get as many as possible with 2 in their mouth and chasing the third. They are also an outstanding looking fish. Their hardy appetites and and colors make them a true pleasure to have in your tank.

I have a large pair of jacks (male and female). my male, Neptune, is fairly aggressive. Lowering temperature helps. My pleco (9" and growing) scares Neptune. Ha! keeping fast fish helps too-tinfoil barbs are good companions.

I have a 55 gal fish tank, I also have a Jack Dempsey that I have raised since he was really small, he is now about 5 inches. Love the fish also. I also have raised 1 red tiger oscar, parrot fish along with the Jack got them all at the same time, same size about. After 2 years all of the sudden my Jack Dempsey killed my Oscar. Before this he has picked on the parrot fish that is not any where close to the jacks size but then turns his attention to the Oscar. We also put 2 feeder fish (Goldfish) in for the Oscar to eat but that has never happened so we have the goldfish for about 3 months now. Jack is also not eating them

They grow VERY fast. Beautiful fish, but they eat everything. I kept wondering where my fish were disappearing to. I thought it was my Firemouth. Then one day, I saw a fish hanging out of the Dempsey's mouth. He killed 3 more fish before he had to go.

This is my first experience with Jacks. I saw the blue dempseys first and absolutely fell in love. Yes, you can say that it was love at first sight. Since then I bought 5 smaller reg. Jacks. I am playing the waiting game now. To breed the blues you must breed down to a reg. jack. I hope that my Love and Patience pays off. I would like nothing more for hobbyist like myself to be able to enjoy these amazingly beautiful fish at a REASONABLE price. If nothing comes of it I will just enjoy them for the rest of their pampered lives. Their tank is one of many that I own. I just hope that everyone enjoys theirs as much as I.

I think that the jack dempsey is the meanest fish in the world!it ate our tiger barb and the other one is still running for dear life! I need to find a way to get rid of it. I think I'll give it to my friend Abel he has a lot of nice goldfishes for the jack(***) dempsey
