One of the best all around pet stores in Illinois. Fish carried include central,
South American, and African cichlids, barbs, danios, tetras, beta's, catfish,
and guppies. They also carry a full line of supplies. Fish are all reasonably
priced and very healthy. Pat, the store owner, is very knowledgeable about
fish, having raised them for many years.

King Coral easily has one of the best selections of cichlids and catfish in
Chicago. If your into African cichlids, plecos and synos then you must visit
this place. Also, they will also order stuff for you and can get wild caught
and F1s. The staff knows their fish.

I've been to well over 35 fish stores while I've been keeping fish. This
store is THE WORST!! It is absolutely disgusting inside the store AND inside
their fish tanks. The store REEKS with a scent of dead fish, cat-poop, and
Ammonia. The staff was incredibly rude, not helpful, and even accused me
of stealing a piece of dead coral!! The lady came out of the store and came
up to the car window and asked me where I had the rock I was looking at!!
Back into the box lady! Really a terrible experience and I thought their
fish selection s**ked. Oh yeah, all they had Cichlid wise were tiny, tiny
babies. No mature fish anywhere!

They have a good selection of cichlids- about 45 tanks, salt
water, and community fish. Birds, reptiles, and hamsters. Prices are
typical pet shop. Beats the Super Stores for selection by a mile.
Rock by the pound. Staff is OK for knowledge, I've had both good and bad
advice. They keep some mixed and hybrid tanks, though.

ENORMOUS SELECTION. They carry everything here, from
tropical, to marine, to coldwater. Tons of cichlids and community fish. Many
varieties of plecos also. Lots of live plants. Tanks are very well
maintained—even bettas are kept fairly warm with a lighting system, and
their little bowls are exceptionally clean. The whole store is absolutely
beautiful, with tons of gorgeous “display only” tanks, including a
hallway lined with what must be at least a 1,000g tank along each
wall—one is an Amazon biotope, the other features large cichlids. I played
dumb for the staff, and they seemed to know what they were talking
about. 48 hour guarantee on all livestock. Prices are general high, but
it’s free to sign up for the “Fish Club,” which means you receive
25% off of all but the most expensive fish and plants.

On Saturday 11/01/08 I went to Birds & Beast in Crystal Lake explaining that
I had a newt - not sure of what kind, we've had it for 7 years in a 10 gal
tank no heater, small fake plant and plastic rock and side filter. I had just
been given a 30 gal tank by my neighbor and I was looking for another newt.
The kid who helped me on Sat. was great - very helpful even figured out what
kind of newt I had. I got another newt, some feeder fish, and an underwater
filter, heater and a plastic plant. I spent $116 that day - including a lifetime
membership to Birds & Beast. Sunday I went back to Birds & Beast for another
newt, ended up buying a pleco, another plastic plant and I also bought a Butterfly
Fish - these of which were in the small tank with the newts. That fish was
$20. Not once did the woman selling me the fish or newt tell me that since
my tank hadn't "cycled" yet that spending $20 on a fish might not be a good
idea and that it might not live very long. So when I go into Birds & Beast
on Wed. evening with the body of the Butterfly Fish & a sample of water the
kid who sold me the newt on Sat. told me that my water was too high in 1 chemical.
The another kid comes over and tells me that because my water hasn't "cycled"
they would not give me my money back. The kid I talked to on Sat. knew I had
just put up the tank, the woman on Sunday when I was spending another $40
didn't even ask. If I had known that my tank needed to be set up at least
6 - 8 weeks before adding that kind of fish - I never would have bought it.
But now, I am out not just the $20 I spent on that fish but I am also out
the money I paid for a lifetime membership for a place that I will NEVER shop
at again because of this. And god forbid anything happens to the newts that
I bought because now knowing their policy they wouldn't offer to replace because
NONE of their employees ever told me I shouldn't be adding fish/animals so
quickly to a tank that was just set up within the past week. I will tell everyone
that I know that the customer service from them was the worst that I have
ever encountered and there are other places to shop.

Hello,
I am an employee of Birds and Beasts pet shop and I feel the review of our store which gave us a poor rating is inaccurate and actually doesn't tell anything about our store. It just tells the story of a customer who was unhappy with our fish policy which we have posted in multiple locations around the store. Her ammonia and nitrites were toxic, and we told her we could not replace the fish because the death was in fact her fault. She then demanded her money back which we denied because the fish death was not covered by our policy. She was even told on her first visit to wait for the cycling process to complete before adding anything else. She ignored this and returned the next day to purchase more fish, which died soon after. I do not feel we should have to have this representation of our store when so many of our customers are happy with our store and our fish.
Thank you for your time,
Jason Reiter
